“Toyota” gravel Sigulda stage recap
On Sunday, under sunny skies but with a brisk northern wind, the second stage of the LVM MTB and Gravel Marathon continued in Sigulda. And there was a novelty! The talented Latvian cyclist Lina Svarinska joined the team Velomens – Komforta Veloceļojumi at the start, aiming to test the gravel course and the new De Rosa gravel bike – the SPIDER.
It all went smoothly – once the RRS team kids were sent off at the start (Lina works as a coach at the Riga Cycling School), it was time for her to prepare for her own race. The experience she gained in the Italian professional team “Eurotarget – Bianchi – Vittoria”, as well as others, allows her to do it effortlessly – and with a smile on her face.
For the third-place finisher of the first stage in his age group — and a TOP 6 overall — this was already his second race with the new and colorful De Rosa SPIDER gravel bike. Once again, it was a great success: a podium finish in his age group.
Although the course was only 68 km long and featured just 601 meters of elevation gain, with several technically challenging sections (pine roots, mulch, MTB-style trails), it might not seem particularly tough or long to some. However, a glance at the athletes’ faces just a few meters from the finish line makes it clear – it has taken all their strength! And that's why we are especially pleased with Krisjsnis’ performance, securing third place in his age group!
This time, a technical issue prevented Lina from fighting for a high position both in her group and the overall ranking. Already at the fifteenth kilometer of the course, the so-called “puncture,” and a double one at that, caused her to fall behind the lead group. The sealant didn’t work... However, fortunately, former professional Latvian cyclist Raivis Belohvosciks was on the course and provided technical assistance. There was also an unknown athlete who selflessly shared tools and a CO2 cartridge. The wheel was fixed with a tube, which took some time but allowed her to finish the race. This is a great example of determination, perseverance, camaraderie, and friendship – the most important qualities not only in racing but in life as a whole!
Krisjanis secured third place in his age group and ninth place in the overall standings, while Veronika took first place in her age group and her race. Of course, Veronika also represents the Velomens – Komforta Veloceļojumi team. It’s clear that the new generation is rising, and cycling is truly the heart of the Ratiniks family 💗
What’s next? The work has started well, but it’s far from finished. Right now, we’re synchronizing the individual calendars of the new team members, and I’m sure I’ll race a few more stages as well. The story continues – see you on the road!
